Chapter 11

“This is so strange,” I said as I tested the controls.

They were a lot more sensitive than the ones on my ship. Every time I touched something, the ship would jolt or beep, and it was a test of my skills just to keep it flying in a straight line. I felt like I did back when I was a teenager learning to drive for the first time, when I’d punched the brakes just like I’d seen on TV and almost throttled myself with the seatbelt in the process. I’d gotten a hell of a lot better at it after that, but after a lifetime of driving for my job, it was really weird to realize I had to learn how to drive all over again.

But I still cut myself some slack. After all, this was a spaceship made by an alien race, not just a truck made by a different company

“It looks so nice from up here,” Rayne said as we headed away from the planet.

“I feel like we should post a warning sign or something,” I said. “Like, ‘Don’t feed the wildlife’.”

“I’d agree, but I’m not sure how we would do that,” Rayne said as she looked at the controls. “Unless you want to go back and actually stick a sign in the dirt.”

“Nope,” I said and shook my head. “I’m not even sure the Karaak have warning buoys. Seems like they’d just blow the place up and move on instead of wasting time with a warning.”

“Or let other people discover the vines for themselves,” she chuckled.

“We can let the Lilacrons know when we get back,” I said. “Maybe they can set up a warning near the planet.”

“Listen to you,” she replied. “Being all optimistic.”

“Gotta believe,” I replied.

We both smiled, but the cockpit soon became quiet. We’d managed the first step in our plan, thanks to the vegetation on Silva, but we still had so much left to do. And this was supposed to be the easy part.

I sighed inwardly and looked around my new ship. It was the strangest thing I’d ever had to operate, and I felt a twinge of nostalgia for my own ship, even though it was powered down and stored neatly in the hold for our quick escape. It felt like I was cheating on Francine, which was stupid because Francine knew exactly what we were doing, but I promised myself I’d get some serious upgrades after all this was over.

But for now, the Skelg would have to do.

The new ship felt a little unsteady at first, probably because of the way it moved through space. The slithering sensation threw me off, and it took some practice to figure out that I didn’t have to keep compensating for the back and forth motion. As long as I kept the ship pointed in the right direction, we were good.

The knowledge that this creature was alive, at least somewhat, was also an odd concept to come to terms with. We were like a virus, a parasite, that had killed off the previous host and had taken over the body.
